But, for this post, I'm going to try to keep it short and sweet and focus on one thing from our trip. . . .Joey's new dog, Shelby. She is a seven week old AKC registered silver lab. I think she's probably the only dog we've ever owned that wasn't a certified mutt! (Other than Wally, of course!) She flew into Jacksonville from Texas on Tuesday the 7th of April and Joey was immediately infatuated with her.

Now, I'll admit, she's gorgeous; but the way he just gushes about her is enough to make even the most secure wife of almost ten years jealous. She and Wally instantly became best friends, so that was a good thing. She even slept almost the entire time during the 12 hour drive back to West Virginia, making her a keeper in my book!
But, of course, I've got to have some humorous story to share, so I'll get on with it. Joey has raved about how beautiful Shelby is and how highly trained she's going to be when he gets through with all of his expert training. Now, that doesn't bother me so much, but he's also constantly joking about how Wally is such a bad influence on her. (Ok, so they fight like the boys over who gets the next turn on the Wii, but it's all in fun.)
Well, yesterday, we decide to take both dogs and the boys to the park to run off some energy. The boys took their bikes so they could ride around the bike path while Joey and I walked "our" dogs. So, anyway, Joey kept telling me how Wally needs to stay away from her while he's "working" with her, lest he derail all of Joey's teachings. No problem. We didn't want to walk with them anyway!

So, I have to interject at this point that the boys truly have become masters at bike riding. Bae has been riding a bike without training wheels for almost two years, but the speeds he can get to amaze me. Brek too, though he's still sporting training wheels, and miraculously can still wreck his bike. Leave it to Brek!

So, the boys are riding up ahead of me, and I'm strolling along with Wally. He's hilarious because when the boys pass him, he starts running as fast as he can, his long ears flapping in the breeze, until he steps on one of them and abruptly lurches to one side and creams on the pavement. Still, he gets up and goes at it again. We'd walked awhile and lapped Joey and Shelby, 'cause she was being stubborn and would walk a few steps, then stop (I guess for a rest). The whole scene just cracked me up. Here was Joey telling me how she was so much more beautiful and more intelligent than Wally, but at least he knows how to walk on a leash, right?! We cruise along beside them for awhile, until Shelby starts to try and wrestle with Wally, at which point Joey tells me to go on ahead, so he can continue her "training." Wally and I were glad to oblige. The boys were leaving us in the dust anyway.
We got about half a lap away and I looked back to see a guy approaching Joey. They stopped and were talking, with Joey motioning to Shelby and I could just picture the conversation. "Oh, yeah, she is a purebred champion bloodline laborador retriever from Houston. She's so intelligent and beautiful. She puts my wife's little bassett hound to shame." We lapped them once and kept going. We finally finished up and headed to the car. We loaded up the boys bikes and got the dogs settled in the car. As we were pulling away, I said, "what were you and that guy talking about?" He grinned and said, "He came over and asked me if that bassett hound belonged to me."

CLASSIC. While Shelby is now and will probably always be much more beautiful and distinguished than Wally, he'll steal the hearts of all who come in contact with him. Now that I think about it, Wally and Shelby remind me of me and Joey. She may be a little more refined and graceful, but a goofy bassett hound that trips over his ears has won her heart. In her eyes,he's the best looking dog around.
